Document transcription

Do you have old letters, documents or genealogical materials that you find difficult to read?

Handwriting styles have changed enormously over the centuries and some old documents can feel intimidating, or even impenetrable, to us today.

But these documents can offer a valuable window onto the past, and may contain valuable genealogical detail that might not be found elsewhere.

As a trained palaeographer, I can transcribe these difficult documents for you, and present them so that they are easy for you to read and understand.

I use the ‘semi-diplomatic’ transcription convention, which leaves original spellings unchanged but expands on abbreviations by inserting the missing letters. This helps to retain the style and ‘feel’ of the original, whilst filling in the gaps left by unfamiliar abbreviations and contractions.

As part of any transcription, I will also explain any archaic words or concepts, to give you a full appreciation of the content and significance of your document.

If you have any old genealogical materials that you’re struggling to read, and you think I might be able to help, why not contact me for a free initial consultation?
